ABOUT OUR FOUNDER:

Students may initially come to USMMA because of Tom‘s impressive credentials, but it’s his integrity, generosity, and authentic kindness that make them stay.

With a deep commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive atmosphere, Tom emphasizes the importance of respect, humility, and personal growth in every aspect of training. His approachable demeanor and sense of humor create a space where students of all ages and skill levels can thrive—whether they’re perfecting a submission or simply working to be better versions of themselves.

Tom is dedicated to ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the door. His passion for both martial arts and yoga, combined with his genuine care for his students, sets him apart as not just a coach, but a mentor and community leader.

WHY MMA?

“I’ve been passionate about martial arts and Western boxing since childhood. Even when life got busy with a career and family, I kept training and eventually, more than 25 years ago, I stumbled onto Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and that’s when everything clicked for me. Since then, I’ve earned my BJJ black belt under Tim Burrill and a No-Gi black belt from Doug Calenda at Team Elite, which has been an incredible journey.

I’ve also been lucky enough to train with Kru Mark DellaGrotte at Sityodtong for over 20 years, and have earned the title of Kru in Muay Thai.

Along the way, I became a USA Boxing coach, coaching golden gloves champs and incorporating western boxing into the USMMA curriculum which has been another rewarding experience.

All of this kind of came together and led me to creating my version of MMA and the winning team that I’m very proud of.”

WHAT HAS SHAPED YOU AS AN INSTRUCTOR?

“I’ve been very fortunate to train alongside incredible athletes and to have coached and cornered elite fighters at the UFC and WEC. But honestly, what’s shaped me the most as an instructor isn’t just the big events—it’s the everyday moments spent with my students- seeing them grow and pushing through challenges. The experience I’ve gained along the way has taught me that being a great coach is about more than knowledge and accolades—it’s about connecting with people, listening, and creating a space where everyone feels supported. That’s what really matters to me.”

WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS:

“In my classes, you can expect a great workout, valuable learning, and a fun environment—all while ensuring a safe space to grow in your skills.”

OFF THE MAT:

“When I’m not training, I like to cook, play guitar, and spend quality time with my family. My wife, Danielle, who’s also my business partner, shares these moments with me. When we can find the time, we enjoy quick vacations and traveling to visit our kids.”
